Why cloud prices differ by region, and how to choose

Par Rohit Athaide · Publié le 3 nov. 2026

The same virtual machine can cost a different amount in two regions of one cloud. Region choice is therefore part of any cost comparison, and it should be matched across clouds or the comparison means little.

Why prices differ

Vendors set prices per region because their costs differ: land, power, network, local taxes and demand. Newer or smaller regions are sometimes priced higher, and a few regions are priced lower to attract workloads. The differences are not the same for every service, so a region that is cheaper for compute may not be cheaper for storage or data transfer.

Not every service is available in every region either. A new service usually launches in a few regions first.

What else should decide your region

Price is one factor among several, and rarely the first one.

  • Where your users are. Latency falls as the distance shrinks.
  • Data residency. Law or contract may require data to stay in a country or area.
  • Service availability. The services and sizes you need must exist there.
  • Where your other systems run. Moving data between regions is billed and slow, so keep chatty systems together.
  • Resilience. A second region for disaster recovery doubles part of the bill.
  • Compliance. Check the vendor’s own compliance pages for the region you choose.

A small price gap is not worth a worse choice on any of these.

How this site handles regions

Comparing “AWS in Virginia” with “Azure in Mumbai” would mislead. The site groups the closest equivalent region on each cloud into a region group, such as US East or India, and compares inside a group. The estimator picks a group for you and lets you change it, and your choice is remembered only if you click a control to save it. The methodology page lists the pairs.

Only two groups are compared so far. A full list of each cloud’s regions is not on the site yet, so use the vendor’s own region pages for that.

Checking price by region

  1. Choose the services you will use.
  2. Look up each in the regions you can legally and practically use.
  3. Compare the total for your workload, not one line. The price catalog shows prices by region group for the services in it, and the estimator totals a whole workload.
  4. Add the cost of moving data between regions, if the design needs it. See data transfer costs.

For India

Many teams in India run in a Mumbai region for latency and residency. The guide on cloud costs in India covers rupee pricing, GST and the choices specific to that market.
