Cloud regions in India compared: Mumbai, Pune and more

Par Rohit Athaide · Publié le 4 nov. 2026

Short answer: Indian teams usually want data and servers close to users, and sometimes inside the country for legal reasons. All four clouds have regions in India, but the cities, the set of services and the prices differ. Choose by latency, service availability, price and data rules, in that order of what you can measure.

Key points

  • Our India comparison group matches the closest equivalent region on each cloud.
  • Azure’s Central India region is in Pune, the others in the group are in Mumbai.
  • A new region can lack services or sizes.
  • Backups and failover need to stay in India too if data must.
  • Prices differ by region and by cloud, so compare the exact regions.

Which regions do our comparisons use?

For the India group, we match the closest equivalent region on each cloud:

Cloud Region code Area
Azure centralindia Pune
AWS ap-south-1 Mumbai
Google Cloud asia-south1 Mumbai
Oracle ap-mumbai-1 Mumbai

The cloud vendors also run other Indian regions, such as Hyderabad, Chennai or Delhi. Each vendor lists its regions on its own page, such as AWS regions, Azure regions, Google Cloud locations and Oracle regions. What we compare is on the regions page.

What should I weigh?

  1. Latency to your users. Mumbai and Pune suit most of India. Test from where your users are.
  2. Service availability. A new region may lack some services or sizes. Check the vendor’s regional table for each service you use.
  3. Price. Prices vary by region and by cloud. A region that costs more per hour can still be right if it cuts latency. See why prices differ by region.
  4. Data rules. If data must stay in India, confirm that backups and failover stay in India too.
  5. Resilience. A second zone in the same region costs extra. See multi-AZ costs.

What does a worked example look like?

Made-up round numbers to show the method, not real prices. You serve 100,000 users in India from one app server. Option A is a region 5 percent more expensive with 15 ms round-trip latency. Option B is 5 percent cheaper with 60 ms.

Item Option A Option B
Server cost per month (made up) 105 100
Round trip to users 15 ms 60 ms
Page with 20 sequential calls 20 x 15 = 300 ms of network wait 20 x 60 = 1,200 ms

A saving of 5 per month costs 900 ms on a chatty page. If your app makes many small calls, latency matters more than the price difference. If it serves large downloads or batch jobs, the cheaper region is the better fit. Decide using your own call pattern.

What about prices in rupees?

Vendors list prices in dollars. Your invoice may differ because of the exchange rate and tax. See cloud costs in rupees, euros and dollars and cloud costs in India.

Which mistakes are common?

  • Choosing the region by price alone, then adding a CDN to fix latency.
  • Assuming a service exists in a new region.
  • Keeping backups in another country while data must stay in India.
  • Comparing an Indian region on one cloud with a US region on another.

Decision checklist

  • Where are my users? Have I measured latency from there?
  • Does every service I need exist in this region?
  • Must data, backups and failover stay in India?
  • Have I compared the exact regions on price?

Frequently asked questions

Which cloud regions are in India?

All four clouds covered here have regions in India. Our India comparison group uses Azure Central India (Pune), AWS Asia Pacific Mumbai, Google Cloud asia-south1 (Mumbai) and Oracle ap-mumbai-1. Each cloud also runs other Indian regions, listed on its own pages.

Is Pune or Mumbai better for latency?

They are close enough that users across most of India see similar latency. Test from where your users are, since the network path matters more than the small distance between the cities.

Do cloud prices differ between Indian regions?

Prices can differ between regions and between clouds. Compare the specific regions you would use, not a country average.

Does my data stay in India if I pick an Indian region?

Data stored in the region stays in that region unless you copy it elsewhere. Check that backups, failover and support access also stay inside India if the rule applies to you.

Do all services exist in every Indian region?

No. A newer region can lack some services or sizes. Check each vendor's regional availability table for every service you plan to use.
